Kempsville Elementary -  Extended Day Kindergarten

General  information

Extended day Kindergarten  (EDK) is a half day program designed to support students in their academic learning during their Kindergarten year. This half day program is added on to the half day K session, which allows the student to remain for the entire school day. Students will ride the school bus to school in the morning to arrive at 8:30 AM and leave the school via bus at 3:00 PM dismissal time. Students are invited to be a part of the class based on a screening that takes place at the end of the summer before the start of their Kindergarten year, or during the first 5 days of their Kindergarten year.

The class size is limited to 15 students.  The extended day Kindergarten teacher and your child's classroom teacher work together closely to monitor your child's academic needs and progress.  The EDK teacher works with the students in: a whole group setting, small groups, and individually to accomplish the goals of the Kindergarten curriculum. Report cards/grades and homework are only issued by your child's classroom teacher.  Conferences are held with your classroom teacher, and the EDK teacher if needed. Regular attendance and good citizenship are expected in the EDK classroom.
